About Me

My general interests include artificial intelligence, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing. I am particularly interested in the following fields:

  • Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing
  • Reinforcement Learning for Natural Language Processing
  • Conversational AI (Dialog systems, conversational agents, QA, reading comprehension, etc.)
  • Language Generation or Text Generation (long text, story, data-to-text etc.)
  • Sentiment Understanding, Sentiment/Emotion Analysis, Opinion Mining
  • NLP Applications (Extraction, matching, reasoning, etc.)

I am leading a research group named Conversational AI (CoAI, GitHub link), and my group is developing a dialog system toolkit, ConvLab (collaboration with Microsoft, GitHub link). Some research highlights are as follows: 

  • My group published Emotional Chatting Machine (AAAI 2018) which for the first time addresses the emotion factor in large-scale neural dialog systems, was reported by 参考消息,新华社,MIT Technology Review, the Guardian, and NIVIDIA. Story Ending Generation was reported by TechXplore.

Recruitment

I am recruiting highly self-motivated and hardworking students, post doctors, algorithm engineers, and system developers.

For PhD students and interns, you are expected to have good mathematics and programming skills since computer science is essentially a MATH science.

For algorithm engineers and system developers, you are expected to have experiences in developing NLP algorithms and systems, with good project management and programming skills.

I am also welcome international visiting students, and I have successfully supervised students from Italy, Switzerland, and France. But, you have to be prepared to do good research here or develop useful systems or tools.

I also supervised and led many undergraduates to do research, many of who had published papers on premier conferences such as ACL, AAAI, IJCAI, etc. Here are my thoughts on how undergraduates can make successful research
